Intrinsic motivation - this was defined by Herzberg as 'motivation through the work itself'.
The intrinsic motivators, which are concerned with the notion of the 'quality of working life' (a phrase promoted by advocates of the notion of intrinsic motivation but little used today), are likely to have a deeper and longer-term effect because they are inherent in individuals and not imposed from outside.
But it should not be assumed that intrinsic motivation is good and extrinsic motivation is bad.
Intrinsic motivation is provided when jobs are well designed.
It also explains why intrinsic motivation arising from the work itself can be more powerful than extrinsic motivation.
